    I have watched dozens of clients spend money on blue light glasses expecting them to fix eye strain, headaches, and sleep problems all at once. The marketing around these lenses is aggressive. It is also misleading. Most claims come from lens manufacturers, not from independent research. The truth is more boring and more useful. Blue light glasses can help in specific situations, but only if you choose the right pair and use them correctly.     How blue light affects sleep and eye strain differently

Blue light suppresses melatonin production, which delays sleep onset. That part is well documented. Eye strain, however, is a different story. The evidence that blue light itself causes digital eye strain is weak. For sleep protection, you usually want forty to sixty percent blocking in the 400–460 nanometer range. Cheap glasses often use a thin coating that wears off within weeks. I have tested ten dollar glasses that claimed to block ninety percent and actually blocked less than the tinted plastic from a pair of safety goggles. Without third party verification, the numbers on the package mean nothing. That is why I now check for independent test reports before I recommend any brand.

    What to look for in a lens coating

    The coating matters more than the frame. A good blue light coating is applied evenly and has two properties. First, it blocks a measurable percentage of blue light without distorting colors too much. Yellow or orange tints are fine for evening use, but for daytime, a clear or slightly warm coating is preferable. Second, the coating must resist scratches and oils. I have seen clients who bought glasses with a cheap coating that peeled off after two months. The lens material itself also plays a role. Polycarbonate lenses naturally block some blue light, while glass lenses block very little. If you are choosing glasses for daytime screen work, look for a coating that blocks around twenty to thirty percent of blue light. For evening use, aim higher, up to sixty percent, but accept that the yellow tint will be noticeable.

    The one case where I skip blue light glasses entirely

    I tell some clients not to buy blue light glasses at all. If you work in a room with good lighting, take regular breaks, and use your phone on a warm color setting after dark, the added benefit of glasses is minimal. I have a software developer client who tried blue light glasses for a month and saw no change in his eye comfort. What helped him was adjusting his monitor brightness and using a standing desk. Blue light glasses are a tool, not a cure. I use them myself during late night reading because they help me fall asleep sooner. But I never promise that they will stop headaches or make you more productive. Save your money if you already have good screen habits. Spend it only if you are specifically struggling with sleep quality after screen use and have already tried reducing brightness and using night mode. In that specific case, a pair with a verified coating can make a small but real difference.
